Submission guidelines are starting to mention AI detectors
If you submit work anywhere, expect to see a line about AI in the guidelines sooner or later — here’s what to do about it before it’s your deadline.
Two patterns are showing up in submission guidelines: a disclosure requirement (“state whether any part of this was AI-assisted”), or a house scan before acceptance. Neither is universal yet, but both are becoming more common.
Practical steps either way:
- Keep your own draft history. The same version-history trail that protects a student protects a submitting writer — see keeping proof your essay is yours for the mechanics, which apply just as well here.
- Run your own check before submitting, especially for pieces in a tight, formulaic form (press releases, structured reviews) that can read as templated to a statistical detector with no AI involved at all.
- Read the guideline’s actual wording. “No AI-generated content” and “disclose AI assistance” are different rules — know which one you’re agreeing to before you hit submit.
