Why academic and scientific writing scores oddly
Academic prose has been trending toward formula for longer than AI detectors have existed. The detector just measures it.
House style already looks like what a detector flags
“It is important to note,” “furthermore,” consistent passive voice, evenly structured paragraphs — long-standing conventions of academic writing, adopted for clarity and consistency across a field, not because of any AI tool. A detector reading this prose is reading decades of style-guide convention.
The methods section is usually the most uniform part
Methods and procedure sections in particular tend to follow a fixed, near-template structure across an entire field, because that consistency is what makes a paper’s methods comparable to others’. Expect this section specifically to score higher than a discussion or introduction, regardless of authorship.
What to check if a journal or supervisor raises a score
Whether the specific claims, citations and results are accurate and specific to the actual research — a detector cannot assess any of that, and it is the part that actually matters for academic integrity in this context.
If your field’s own conventions are being read as suspicious
That is worth raising directly with an editor or supervisor as a genre issue, not something to solve by deliberately writing less like a published paper in your field.
